OUR STORY

Pax Christi is Latin for Peace of Christ. The name of our community is a constant reminder of the need for a Christian presence in the world and the commission for all Christians to make real the peace of Christ.

In 1987, Bishop Richard C. Hanifen of the newly formed Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs, identified a clear need for a parish to be established in the rapidly growing northern portion of Douglas County. In a mission diocese with a limited number of priests, Pax Christi was founded on the concept of lay leadership with no resident priest. A lay Parish Director was appointed with the role of mission organizer to serve the pastoral and administrative needs of the growing community. On June 6, 1988 forty families gathered to celebrate mass in the gym of Northridge Elementary School.

The Archdiocese of Denver donated fifteen acres of land to the newly formed Diocese of Colorado Springs, which formed the Pax Christi Campus. A stewardship task force began work to raise funds for a Chapel, a Multi-Purpose Building and a temporary office. After ten years of celebrating mass in the gym, the parish of seven hundred families moved to our current location.

On July 27, 2000, we welcomed our first resident pastor, Father Ken Przybyla. At that time, 800 families were registered. Today, our parish has grown to over 1,700 families!

Three part time and eight full time employees comprise our staff. Our religious education program for preschool through 12th grade has over 1,000 students guided by over 200 catechists and aides. The parish supports over 70 active ministries and 5 outreach programs. Over 51% of our adults participate in these ministries.

In June 2002, we finished the final phase of construction and built a dedicated worship space. On September 29, 2002 Bishop Hanifen dedicated our new church, followed by a parish-wide celebration. Also, in September 2002, we retrofitted the Multi-Purpose Building into an educational, social and office facility, now known as our Christi Center. In 2004, we expanded our parking lot to accommodate more people and we are still growing!

In 2006, we completed the construction and landscaping of our parish Labyrinth, a beautiful contemplative prayer walk on the south side of our Chapel.
